As a Native Hawaiian, this really saddens me to see a Hawaiian man arrested for speaking our native language in Hawaii. But I am not surprised; this is par for the colonized course.

@JubalBarca The truth is, this mass-cultural appropriation and oppression is normalized here. Imagine if, in 2018, there was a Native American community who had a Disneyland-like resort built in the middle of their village, and the people made to do bastardizations of their sacred dances, wear mock 'feather headresses' and entertain the rich tourists for $7 an hour. And then be arrested for speaking their own language. It'd be an utter outrage, right? But that is just everyday life, in Hawaii.

Living white is a little like that except it happened so long ago that nobody much realizes anymore that our way of life would fit that description, and social darwinism has had longer to weed out and develop suppressively toward those who can't cope with it. But I think that'd be true under any culturally suppressive, economically stratified imperial society: sycophants thrive, dissenters become butt monkeys hated by all sides
