People interested either in #history or #genealogy, or possibly #statistics and #graphs generally - do people have any good ideas for ways to display non-conventional family trees? The industry-standard GEDCOM system, and indeed normal "family tree" type diagrams, have real drawbacks beyond certain levels of complexity, intergenerationality, and, uh, consanguinity, which can make them poor choices for historians of some periods.
Thoughts/ideas welcome! :)
@JubalBarca I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the hashtag for historians on mastodon should be #pastodon
No further input, sorry
@JubalBarca Have you considered using something like LucidChart or other flowcharting software? I've been able to create some very flexible diagrams that way. It may not be exactly what you're looking for on this application, but it might be worth looking at.
@quantumcowboy It's more styles of diagram than software I'm looking at - I'm working on looking at what sort of system I can build into my own software package initially.
@JubalBarca hey @Canageek what was the program you were using for the #Liaden family tree?
@DialMforMara @JubalBarca Gramps. The UI is...not good, but it is free and does what I want pretty well. There are other options two, wikipedia has a list.
@Canageek @JubalBarca I recommend it for complex systems of adoption/fostering
@DialMforMara @JubalBarca The interface for that is *crazy* but makes a strange kind of sense once you get into it.
It works in family units, not just descended from, but that makes adoption/fostering really easy, as you can add anyone to a family in any position.
@Canageek @DialMforMara I'm looking more for visualisation styles that I can build into my own software - I'm not sure a family unit system would help here, but I'll have a think about it.
@JubalBarca @DialMforMara Have a look at it, they've got quote a few visualizations built in. I don't get the point of a lot of them honestly, but they are probably useful to someone.
@JubalBarca
Does it have to be paper / flat visual or can it be responsive?
