messenger users,

Would it be fair to call Riot a federated alternative to Slack?

@switchingsocial No,Matrix is a federated alternative to Slack.Riot is only a very popular client for it but there are also many other clients.The protocol is called Matrix.

@nipos @switchingsocial one can develop a Matrix client that doesn't look like Slack. It can even be totally unrelated to instant messaging. But Riot is the Matrix client that can be an alternative to Slack.

@nipos

@switchingsocial

It's also pretty much the only one supporting e2e encryption. Which with federation becomes extra important

@nipos @switchingsocial

Doesn't have the same features, wouldn't call that a chat system, but also it's crypto never failed on me as bad as riot has. I'm sure there are people with very different experiences there though.

Also there is not one group doing email, there is practically just one organisation behind matrix and riot.

@switchingsocial Yes, but you need to mention that Riot is just a client for Matrix.

@switchingsocial I’m surprised more people don’t see IRC as a federated alternative to Slack.

@gabek

No. that's because #IRC was around when the #Slack developers were still wetting their trousers, that's why it's not an “alternative” to it. 👍

In fact, Slack is just a non-federated, poorly thought-out IRC knock-off.

@switchingsocial

@switchingsocial Matrix is a federated alternative to slack. Riot is just a front end which uses electron, which is not completely free software. I use fractal

@alextee but sadly fractal still lacks a lot of features. It's really nice as a simple text chat client, but it doesn't do encryption, audio, video,... I also use fractal, but I also use riot when needed.
@switchingsocial

@RLetot @switchingsocial @alextee byb audio, what do you mean? We have an inline audio player now. We don't have video yet, but an Outreachy intern is working on it.

Encryption is also in the works, with the library we'll use maybe being ready at the end of the month.

@brainblasted
Didn't know about the audio, then I need to update 😃 And glad to hear that the other features are in the works (although I didn't doubt). I didn't mean to criticize, just to say why I use both clients.
@switchingsocial @alextee

@brainblasted
ah no, I searched a bit, you mean that fractal is able to play audio files, and soon video files. What I meant was audio and video chats, talking live to a real person, which to the best of my knowledge fractal cannot do (yet).
@switchingsocial @alextee

@alextee riot is also on your webbrowser, I don't use electron but firefox @switchingsocial
