is a free open federated alternative to Instagram.

It's part of the Fediverse, so you can follow PixelFed accounts from Mastodon, Pleroma etc.

You can sign up at many different instances, for example:

(You can find more instances at )

You can follow PixelFed's official account at:

@switchingsocial @pixelfed you say I can follow accounts from a pixelfed instance in mastodon. But when I click on I only get greeted by the homepage of that instance and I have no idea how to find people to follow on it.

@jeena @pixelfed

At the moment, the easiest way is to click on the account's follow button next to their profile in Mastodon itself. Here's an example account:

To bring a Pixelfed account up in Mastodon, put the account's Pixelfed address into the Mastodon search box and search for it.

For example, searching for

brings up the account

(By the way, there is a much easier method called "remote follow" which is currently being worked on.)

@switchingsocial @pixelfed I was able to figure out how to follow someone once I find their username because I get it through some other chanel like IRC or you mentioning it.

My problem is that I have no way of finding people on those instances which I'm not a member of.

@jeena @pixelfed

As far as I know, Pixelfed posts should be discoverable by searching for hashtags on Mastodon, and you can follow the account that posted them.

Also, of course, you can find them if people mention them in posts.

@switchingsocial hm, is there a way to make my own instance to search hashtags from a @pixelfed instance?

I think my instance only searches stuff in my database, which means things people posted who I am already following.

@jeena @pixelfed

Relay servers do that on Mastodon, so that even small instances get a good variety of posts from a wide range of instances.

I don't know if they cover Pixelfed posts yet though?

Mastodon is a microblogging site that federates with most instances on the Fediverse.
