PixelFed is a free open federated alternative to Instagram.

There are lots of different instances you can sign up at, for example:

It is part of the ActivityPub-powered Fediverse, so you can follow PixelFed accounts from Mastodon etc. For example: @earth

You can follow the project's latest news at @pixelfed

I realise a lot of people will know about PixelFed already, but it's just been updated to 0.9 which has a greatly upgraded federation system amongst other improvements, so it's worth taking another look if you tried it before.

Also, a lot of people still think PixelFed means (which is currently closed to new members), but you can sign up at any of the instances listed. The ones listed are all updated to 0.9 and open to new members.

@switchingsocial But there’s still no mobile app to use #pixelfed with, or am I mistaken?

A friend wanted to switch from IG to pixelfed a few months ago but had to halt that move because she couldn’t use it with her phone (where she’s taking all her pics).

Not yet, but version 0.9 brings an API for mobile apps.

So, there should be app support soon.

I'm not sure if it's ready yet but I think #fedilab will be one of the first clients it already supports #peertube and #mastodon

@LPS @schokopflaster

Yes, I think said they were just waiting for the mobile API.

Wouldn't be surprised if they are the first app to support PixelFed.

hmm App is most important to move general public as almost no one use instagram from Pc or web browser.

Hopefully, Fedilab or any dedicated mobile app will be released with native support to Pixel fed.

@switchingsocial @inditoot @schokopflaster

Nobody uses Instagram from PC or web browser because they basically don't let you! If you could upload it'd be a different story (at least for photographers who edit on a PC)

@schokopflaster @switchingsocial Until the mobile app is ready, on Android/Chrome, if you "Add to Home screen" from the burger menu, it makes an app shortcut. No better than a normal browser window, other than freeing up UI real estate.

@switchingsocial Thanks for that. I haven't heard of PixelFed before and I want to check it out.

I found out about federated alternatives through mastodon; it's hard to find interaction in these places places for topics that are already niche, but it exists.

@switchingsocial there's now too. We've got 9 users :-P

Anyone into 3d printing is welcome.

Mastodon is a microblogging site that federates with most instances on the Fediverse.
