Announcement for people celebrating bonfire night / fireworks night / Guy Fawkes night Show more
If you celebrate bonfire night/Guy Fawkes night, please be aware that hedgehogs and other threatened species often sleep or nest in an unlit bonfire, especially if the bonfire is built days before it is lit.
To avoid injuries to animals, it's very important to build or move the bonfire on the same day you light it.

Do you speak a language other than English?
Do you want to help the Fediverse grow?

Are there any other Fediverse translation pages that should be mentioned?
there's still hope for humanity:
"Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app from their phone in the last year, says study"
I have deleted the recent post about DRM-free games, I didn't realise there was any controversy about the services listed.
The services listed were based on suggestions people had given to a similar thread earlier in the year, but apparently the controversy had happened after that.
Apologies for the orphaned posts, deleting the original post seemed the least worst course of action.
Added "Paywall: The Business of Scholarship" (2018), you can watch it here:
Feature-length documentary about the parasitic publishing companies that syphon off billions of dollars of public money by pointlessly charging scientists to read each other's research.
Don't let Google News decide which stories you see, control your own news with RSS:
Also, did you know you can follow any Mastodon account through RSS?
Just add ".rss" to the end of the account's address, for example:
Announcing Funkwhale Sync #1, let's build Funkwhale together! https://blog.funkwhale.audio/~/Announcements/announcing-funkwhale-sync-1-let's-build-funkwhale-together/
I just opened a PR on Mastodon github - it makes stuff from Prismo shared/interacted on Mastodon more readable (by attaching a link under the post title - just like for videos from peertube).
Upvotes highly appreciated!
User Interface Designers:
It's difficult to read things which have no focus. If it's several columns all the same width, the eye doesn't know where to start or rest.
The effect is similar to when David Bowie watches several televisions in "The Man Who Fell To Earth", i.e. incomprehensible.
Please give things a focus, make one column wider and put the most important stuff in that. It's how most people cope with seeing several things at once (e.g. varying headline sizes in newspapers).

A new Linux smartphone is coming!
With an affordable price, too. Pine64 is behind this device running KDE Plasma.
KDE Neon creator Jonathan Riddell revealed this at Open Source Summit and it will be called PinePhone.
You can expect this open source Linux smartphone to cost $100+ for 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.

As predicted by many commentators, #CambridgeAnalytica is going to escape punishment because all the people involved simply formed a new (but legally separate) company:
By going after companies and not people, it is very difficult to enforce privacy laws.
This is a familiar pattern that commercial con artists use: run up liabilities with one company, then transfer assets to a new company. If they get caught, they simply do it again, and it's legal.
This is new to me, people have been abusing ad-blocking extensions to achieve political goals and censor some websites 😖 https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBlock-issues/issues/285 #censorship #adblocking
