U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
In case you missed it, the "off-the-grid" app Manyverse now has a Fediverse account for announcements and questions:
Manyverse works on Scuttlebutt, a distributed social network without any servers, where people connect directly to each other:
Scuttlebutt lets you have complete control over your data (it's stored on your computer or phone) and over who sees it (only people you connect with).
@switchingsocial do you know of any decentralized live streaming services akin to Twitch and Periscope?
We're now on the fediverse to publish announcements and engage with this community!
This account is operated by @staltz, feel free to send questions and comments. :)
If you want interesting news articles about the Fediverse, you ought to follow the WeDistribute blog:
It's written by alternative social media veteran @sean
WeDistribute runs on a combination of Wordpress and the Pterotype plugin (which adds Fediverse compatibility to Wordpress sites).
Welcome to the new We Distribute!
The project officially moves into a new phase, broadcast on the fediverse itself. https://wedistribute.org/2019/03/welcome-to-the-new-we-distribute/
If you want to protect your followers' privacy, you can make your follower lists private:
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Preferences
3. Tick the "Hide your network" box
4. Select "Save Changes"
You will still see your list of followers, but others won't.
(This also hides the list of who you follow.)
Words that lead to violence Show more
Lots of people on the internet say words cannot do harm like physical actions can, so words should not be restrained in *any* way.
It's an attractive philosophy because it sounds so simple and easy. The trouble is it's just not true.
Words can cause the most evil things to happen:
Please be careful with your words. They're like fires lit in a dry forest, they can easily spiral out of control.

Oh good. Facebook gives advertisers your two factor authentication phone number.
<< They found that when a user gives Facebook a phone number for two-factor authentication or in order to receive alerts about new log-ins to a user’s account, that phone number became targetable by an advertiser within a couple of weeks. >>

Updated the #WriteFreely Instances page to explain more of what's going on, and to not prioritize Write.as over everyone else's instance anymore.
At this point, it gets enough exposure elsewhere on the site. The goal for this page is to help all these other great communities grow.
Translations needed for Fediverse projects Show more
If you know a language other than English, you can contribute to many different Fediverse-related projects by translating their text.
Here are some translation links:
Are there other links to add to this list?
Did you know there's a proposed logo for the #Fediverse?
(Unfortunately I can't find the creator's details, if anyone knows please reply!)
Some things that I have noticed since I quit #Facebook:
- My family still loves me and still talks to me
- Old friends from high-school still talk to me
- Old friends from college still talk to me
- I still meet new people
- I still make new friends
- I still shop at local businesses
- I'm still aware of events in my community
Huh, it's almost like I never needed Facebook in the first place.
Easy-to-use privacy-conscious apps and sites for non-technical people:
mastodon.at is a microblogging site that federates with most instances on the Fediverse.
